It's the sort of cynicism seem ...PEACE ON EARTH
It's the sort of cynicism seem in modern cartoons today like South Park, but Parker and Stone would probably take it to the next level by showing wars breaking out between the small forest animals of Peaceville, but I digress.

It's been said that Hugh Harman wanted to do this as a 2-reeler (twice the length of a regular cartoon short). I sorta wonder what he could've done had he got to develop the story further, possibly a war that breaks out between the good small forest critters of Peaceville (squirrels, rabbits, mice, chipmunks, etc.) and the large, carnivorous animals of the deep woods (bears, wolves, foxes, etc.) would've been an interesting turn, and a sort of repeat of what humans did before, but find some way of turning the title through the Peaceville citizens managing to stand their guard and eventually get an armistice signed with the other side that puts them in the peace they now have (rather than to see the loss of life on either side if the fighting we might seem is seen in a comical light than the seriousness of man before).

Speaking of grandfather squirrels, I recently read a book written in France during the days of it's liberation from Nazi control between 1944 to '45 called "The Beast is Dead" (by writer Victor Dancette and artist Edmond-François Calvo). The book itself (split into two parts) is bracketed by a grandpa squirrel who tells his three young grand kids of the life he had back before and during the time of war that was ranged on his nation from the ravenous country of Barbary (the "Barbarians" themselves are wolves, the dictator alone shouldn't be too hard to guess who he's meant to be). The story itself is meant to be funny animal take on German occupation of France and how the British and American armies came to it's rescue (the British are depicted as bulldogs while Americans are bison, other nations are culturally given animal designations as well).

http://cloud-109.blogspot.com/2010/07/la-bete-est-mort.html
http://lib.byu.edu/exhibits/wwii/bedtime_story.html
http://www.editionsdutriomphe.fr/la-bete-est-morte
http://www.lambiek.net/artists/c/calvo_ef.htm

THE UGLY DUCKLING
Of course, what really struck me about the film, other than the sound design, was that it actually dared to show a father accusing his wife of infidelity followed by a split-up captured on screen. Yeah, it's only non-anthropomorphic ducks, but it's still rather shocking
I suppose I never got that watching it as a 6 or 7 year old back in the VHS days, but checking it out now, that is something. I suppose also different from the original tale is the duckling not having to grow up before he finally figures out what he is after all (of course they only had 8 minutes here and without narration, it made sense to speed things up with a family of swans that comes to his moment of despair.

It wasn't the worst win in the 1930s, but the Academy really missed out on a chance to honor something special.

It's been said for years Hugh Harman never forgot what Peace On Earth was to him and it was pretty much he peak of his whole career looking back on it (I think the only other film from his MGM days I would suggest watching is 1942's "The Hungry Wolf", his last for the studio). He hadn't quite went above it since as his work slowly downgraded to simple industrial films and whatever other work came his way. One unusual project in the early days of television was a pilot called "The Adventures of Sir Gee Whiz on the Other Side of the Moon", rather a failure on Hugh and Rudy's part to not quite understand the nature of their craft versus the modern UPA-ish aesthetics that already came to the TV medium by 1960, giving the film a very dated look. Hugh Harman later passed away in 1982.
http://www.michaelbarrier.com/Interviews/Harman/interview_hugh_harman.htm
http://www.cartoonbrew.com/brewfilms/cartoon-dump-6-sir-gee-whiz-4351.htmlChris Sobieniakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09838106041175506925noreply@blogger.com
