Well it's been over a month since I drove back to my parents' in Virginia, and over a month since the shortlist for the upcoming Oscars were revealed. It's been so long that I've gone and completed the AMPS trio in my other blog. The Oscar nominees were supposed to have already been announced but were delayed due to the terrible California wildfires. But the day has finally arrived where we find out what the new addition to the Best Animated Short lineup will be. And as you might have already been able to tell from the header, the films are:
Beautiful Men
Beurk! (Yuck!)
In the Shadow of the Cypress
Magic Candies
Wander to Wonder
I can't say whether or not it's a good or a bad list because I've only actually seen two of them: In the Shadow of the Cypress (which was readily available on YouTube but had been taken down it seems) and Wander to Wonder (which I purchased from Vimeo). I've been doing regular searches for the others but still with no success. The short film categories are generally pretty tough to predict, and even I probably wouldn't have went with this exact lineup had I been courageous enough to do so. It is worth noting that previous nominees Dice Tsutsumi (Bottle George), Torill Kove (Maybe Elephants) and Don Hertzfeldt (Me) were all left off.
Anyways, among the other nominees it's clear that the Academy has fallen in love with Emilia Perez despite its tepid reception elsewhere, bestowing upon it an astonishing 13 nominations, dwarfing the totals put up by The Brutalist and Wicked (10 nominations) as well as A Complete Unknown and Conclave (8 nominations). Rounding out the Best Picture lineup you've got Anora (6 nominations), Dune: Part Two and The Substance (5 nominations), I'm Still Here (3 nominations), and Nickel Boys (2 nominations).
Of course who am I to judge Best Picture, considering I've seen only two of the nominees as of right now. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I have already seen all five of the Best Animated Feature nominees (Flow, Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail, Wallace and Gromit in Vengeance Most Fowl, and The Wild Robot). I haven't seen all the nominees in Best Animated Feature since 2011, and I got it done even before the nominations were event announced!
Anyways, not much else to say. I really haven't paid all that much attention to movies in 2024, and it probably shows. I guess I need to track down the other three nominees sometime, either when the filmmakers put the videos up or I have to drag myself to one of those showings.
